PART 3 PRACTICAL TEST

The aim of the module 3 practical test for large goods vehicles is to make sure you can drive confidently and safely in a variety of road and traffic conditions.

You must display a good understanding of the Highway Code and demonstrate that you can safely reverse the vehicle.

The practical test will last around one hour, thirty minutes and includes:

  • Practical road driving including a ten minute independent drive
  • Off-road exercises such as reversing & coupling the trailer (if required)
  • Questions on the safety of your vehicle

During your practical road driving, the examiner will want you to demonstrate how you:

  • Use vehicle controls
  • Move the vehicle away at an angle and on an incline
  • Bring the vehicle to a controlled stop
  • Use the mirrors to aid your driving
  • Identify and deal with hazards
  • Select a suitable place to stop
  • Give the appropriate signals which enable safe turning a pulling away
  • Make good progress and control the speed of the lorry
  • Show awareness and anticipate the intentions of other road users

You will also be required to undertake ten minutes of independent driving. This is designed to test your ability to drive safely while making decisions independently.

TEST RESULT

After you’ve taken the practical test, your examiner will immediately inform you if you have passed or failed and explain their decision.

You’ll pass your test if you make:

fewer than fifteen minor faults

No serious or dangerous faults

  • If you fail the part 3 practical test, you must wait a minimum of three working days before you can make another attempt
